From past to present: The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel church

21.02.01

Following a competition organized by the city of Saint-Leonard, the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel church was built for local Italian community in 1985. Five firms received an invitation to participate, including NEUF architect(e)s.

The mayor remembered the firm from the first successful collaboration for the school of Saint-Léonard. The firm was selected and after one Sunday mass (in Italian!), the project was presented to the congregation and a series of exchanges were set up to ensure it met their expectations and budget.

The artist Marcelle Ferron, a major figure in contemporary art in Quebec, created the custom-made stained glass windows. Inspired by Italian culture and sketches from Maurice Amor, NEUF’s prominent draftsman at the epoch, classic but with a contemporary spin, the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel church seduced the entire community: the priest even composed a poem as a tribute to its beauty! His name was engraved on one of the foundation stones along with the other two key contributors to the project: Mayor A. Di Ciocco and H. Yaghjian.
