Built in 1929 by Joseph Raoul Gariépy and run until 1936 by Rose Ouellette, aka La Poune, the building has undergone several transformations over the past century. Abandoned in the early 2000s, it remains a landmark in the neighbourhood, representing Art Deco architecture and a period of great splendour in the city's entertainment industry. However, conservation work was necessary to prevent any irreversible damage to the building.
The project aims to honour the building’s history with a respectful heritage renovation, while implementing an intelligent and flexible transformation. The restoration of the façade and period details will bring the building back to its original splendour. Modernization of the infrastructure, creation of multiple levels and skylights will provide the building with bright, flexible spaces.
This approach, combined with improved energy efficiency, will optimize the existing structure without altering its prestigious image. Embracing the welcoming and popular spirit of La Poune, the new theatre will be at the heart of the contemporary scene, hosting current artistic and cultural events such as international film festivals.
